El economista chileno Ricardo Caballero ha sido testigo privilegiado de todas las últimas crisis y sus desarrollos posteriores. Desde su rol como profesor del Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) y asesor de un hedge fund en Nueva York ha presenciado, opinado y modelado cada una de las grandes tormentas de este verdadero invierno financiero que cayó sobre el mundo a contar de 2008.

With stirring orchestral strains on the soundtrack, teenage soldiers attack Nazis invading their homeland. The camera pulls in tight as the hero of the 1979 Yugoslavian featureBosko Buha falls to fascist gunfire. Soon, however, he and other martyred young partisans are resurrected amid gauzy flowers. These movie excerpts open Croatian artist Renata Poljak’s 11-minute video Staging Actors/Staging Beliefs (2011–12). As the scenes fade from the screen, Poljak intones: “These were the films I grew up with and characters I believed in. I wonder where they are now, along with their ideals.”

“Flowers For You” sounds like an exhibition in which we may be able to predict the contents. Not quite. The artists represented aren’t your garden-variety Sunday painters, though a few may have gotten some inspiration from the garden, so to speak. Pictures of flowers. It is a genre where few would have the courage to tread yet this ubiquitous, staid seeming title is thrown open with an exuberant vigor here in a hugely divergent survey which dares to be anything but cliché. On the contrary, manic and vibrant, this exhibition makes clear the fecundity of the contemporary conversation. The artists dig deep and bundle up flowers that perplex and frighten, soothe and engage, invigorate and astonish. Stoyanov’s bouquet is no empty beauty. We can glimpse the fullest bloom of experience, replete with thorns; death, love, sex, vulnerability, irony, kitsch, - it is all here. “Flowers For You” is a challenge and a celebration by way of eccentric garlands set about our feet.

A raíz de estudios, que venía desarrollando silenciosamente hacía mucho tiempo como profesora de la Universidadde Michigan, concluyó que “las mujeres somos propensas a caer en análisis viciosos y exagerados de cada problema, lo cual amplifica la tristeza y la depresión”, dijo. Su conclusión y sus consejos para salir de ese círculo se transformaron en un best seller:Mujeres que piensan demasiado, (Holt, 2004)

CCU and Y Gallery are pleased to present Invisible Dust, the first New York solo show, curated by Cecilia Jurado of Chilean Artist Alejandra Prieto, winner of the CCU Art Grant. Within her artistic practice, Prieto is dedicated to exploring ideas regarding the status of the object, its conditions of production, functionality and expository modes in the contemporary art world. Her recent coal-based works reflect on the invisible and visible mechanisms and modes of representation in contemporary spaces. She establishes and makes visible the relationships between the sophistication of design and the unskilled labor required for reproduction, and between subjective modes of market entry and purely aesthetic objects.

“Statusfaction” April 5–May 6, 2012. Stephan Stoyanov Gallery
“Statusfaction,” Jeff Gibson’s third solo show with Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, will feature two series of identically sized, archival ink-jet prints—one series comprised of eighteen psychologistic definitions and the other, eighteen image taxonomies—and a five-and-a-half-minute video that interweaves these two bodies of work into a cryptic interaction of image and text.
Jeff Gibson is an Australian-born artist and occasional critic who has worked in a variety of media and contexts—photography, video, posters, banners, and books for galleries and public spaces. A former senior editor of Art&Text magazine, Gibson moved to New York in 1998 to work for Artforum, where he is currently managing editor. Since arriving in New York, he has produced two artist’s books (Dupe: A Partial Compendium of Everyday Delusions and Sarsaparilla to Sorcery), exhibited on the Panasonic Astrovision screen in Times Square as part of Creative Time’s “59th Minute” program, and mounted solo shows at the New York Academy of Sciences, Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, and The Suburban (Chicago).Throughout January 2011, two of the artist’s videos, Smoke and Asylum (both 2010), were projected onto the facade of the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, as part of a curated series presented by Light Work and the Urban Video Project. martyr’s paradoxblatant self-sacrifice as an egomaniacal measure of humility.
